Day 2 (Monday, May 22, 2006)

 

7:00 AM: Wake refreshed after sleeping 13 hours! It's sunny in Seattle, we must be living right! Great view from our room:

8:00 AM: Walk 4 blocks to Pike Place Market (that's the place where they throw the fish in the famous video!). Have breakfast at Lowell's in the market with a great view of the water. (Barb has eggs benedict made with salmon instead of canadian bacon. We later discover that the NY Times travel section says that Lowell's is the best casual place for breakfast in Seattle. Not bad for dumb luck on our part!).

There were lots of folks around the famous "fish throwing" stand, but we quickly discovered that they didn't throw a fish until someone bought a salmon to be cut up, then they threw it to the cutter. Happily, Barb saw a fish thrown so she went away happy!

Spent the rest of the morning exploring the 9 acres of market buildings. Decided that breakfast had been huge, so bought some fruit & cheese and had lunch in our hotel room.

2 PM: Took 3-hour Grayline tour of Seattle. Great tour. Got to see lots of neighborhoods, Univ. of Washington, Bill Gate's place, etc. About 15 of us on a 20-passenger minibus with a great guide/driver. Seattle very pretty city, with a lot of pretty little parks.

7 PM: Dinner at Cutter's Bay House. Great view of Mt. Ranier (which, in our honor, was NOT shrouded in clouds!). When we made our dinner reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion, and Barb told them it was our 40th anniversary. We discovered our table festooned with streamers, etc. Deserts served with candles (hey, they even comped one dessert which led us to be too embarassed to use our $15 off coupon we had found on the web.) We both had Copper River salmon, which was the big "talk-of-the-town" as it had just come into season. If you're interested, click here to find out what the big deal is about Copper River salmon. The waitress was so good that we're still kicking ourselves that we didn't ask to speak to the manager to complement her!
