Day 9 (Monday, May 29, 2006)

10 AM: As we dock in Ketchikan, we're escorted in by a Coast Guard cutter and its zodiac which buzzes around us enforcing the no-go zone for other vessels. Due to security reason, you can't bring your small boat alongside either a military ship or a cruise vessel. We figure everything's OK as long as the cover stays on the deck gun.

Once docked, we head out for the shore excursion we've booked: Misty Fjords National Monument. We board a high-speed catamaran for the 120-mile roundtrip.

Along the way we pass some killer whales, and pause for a few minutes to take some pictures. The skipper apologizes when he must move on so that we can keep on schedule. Most of us would have been happy watching the whales for a couple more hours.

We arrive at our destination: Rudyerd Bay. The entrance to the bay is guarded by New Eddystone Rock, which makes a spectacular picture.

The bay is one of many fjords in the area, with some rather spectacular scenery.

In particular, there is an unbelievable series of waterfalls.

By late afternoon, we're back onboard the Volendam, ready for its 6 PM departure.
